The annual Illinois Society of Professional Engineer’s
Bridge Breaking Competition is an informal, educational, fun contest where participants construct bridge-like structures using Popsicle sticks and glue. These bridges are loaded at their centers until destruction and the bridge with the highest failure weight to the number of sticks used ratio is the winner.
THERE WILL BE COMPETITION IN THE FOLLOWING THREE CLASSES:
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (5, 6, 7, 8th GRADES)
HIGH SCHOOL (9, 10, 11, 12th GRADES)
1. Bridges must be built using only Popsicle sticks, glue, the two end abutments and center joint. All material, except the glue, will be supplied by ISPE.
2. There will be a $1.00 fee for each kit.
3. Only glue may be used to join the Popsicle sticks together. Nails, screws, staples, etc. are not allowed. Any type of glue is acceptable. Excessive use of glue is not acceptable.
4. The Popsicle sticks must be used without modification. Cutting, notching, breaking, twisting, splitting, etc. is not allowed.
5. The bridge must span 30 inches with the center joint located at mid-span. The structure must conform to the size limitations as shown on the opposite side of this sheet.
6. The bridge will be loaded at the center joint until destruction and the bridge with the highest failure weight to number of sticks used ratio will be the winner.
7. For safety reasons, the maximum load applied will be 400 lbs.
8. Contestants may break their bridges anytime between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. on a first come first served basis. Awards will be given out at 12:00 noon.
